A close ally of former Devolution cabinet secretary and aspiring Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waigiru was on Saturday arrested at gun point.  Peter Ndambiri, who is vying for the Mwea parliamentary seat was arrested in the evening and whisked off to Kerugoya police station where he spent the night.

Last year, Ms. Waiguru had named Mr. Ndambiri as her running mate. During the arrest, five police officers pointed guns at Ndambiri as his supporters protested his arrest.

He is accused of kidnapping Jane Njeri Mworia on December 7, last year over the alleged disappearance of Sh. 22,000 meant to fund a youth seminar in the constituency.

Apparently, Ndambiri gave Ms. Mworia the money but she took off with it.  Ms Njeri has denied swindling the politician and insisted that she did not go underground but was indeed kidnapped.

“After my captors released me, they dropped me near Makutano market and I was able to find my way back to Ngurubani market where I live with my three-year-old child,” she said. She later recorded a statement with the police and named Ndambiri as one of her alleged kidnappers.

After spending the night at Kerugoya Police Station, the Nairobi-based businessman was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000 yesterday morning and is expected to appear in court today.
